Red rock hares -- we have a little rabbit -- you see it late at night. Is it a Smith's Red rock hare (Pronolagus rupestris) or is it Hewitt's red rock hare Pronalgus saundersiae) You decide. According to the distribution map here it cant be Hewitt's - but a photograph on iNaturalist gave it a research grade as Hewitt's.
Smith's are more endangered so let us hope it is Smith's! Seen by the Rooiels volunteers on the night block watch patrols. There are some of the photos sent in by Rooielsers on the Rooiels Field Notes Blog in 2016 and again during lockdown.
