Report Back: At the RERA AGM a report was presented on the issue of the Offshore Vessels trapping crayfish within 1 nautical mile of Rooiels shores (usually within 200 metres). After that there were few vessels because of the Christmas period. But they reappeared on Sunday 3rd January. Much flurry of reports of sightings and photographs and repeated contacts made with the authorities. The local inspectorate and Seawatch still not convinced that what these vessels are doing is illegal. But the Head Office has now had meetings with them, it is recognised as illegal and some action is beinng taken and a process is now in place to trigger action when reports are received in future. DAFF is operating under extreme pressure and the local Kleinmond Marine Protection inspectors do not have a boat to respond with. The legislation is available from the Marine Resources, Poaching page
