Dassies - Rock Rabbits - Hyrax are the common names for Procavia capensis, the rock dassie sunning itself on the Rooiels rocks. It is fairly widely distributed in Africa and in the Middle East. There is a slightly different form of the same species in Namibia, and two other species found elsewhere in Africa. They are most closely related genetically to the elephant and the dugong and used to be classified in the same super-order.

Frogs in Rooiels
We are fortunate with a range of frog species including the relatively common A. villiersi which is endemic to the Western Cape where it is found on the slopes of the Hottentots Holland, Kogelberg, and Kleinrivier mountains and eastward to the Bredasdorp Mountains. It occurs from sea level at Rooi Els and Betty’s Bay, to altitudes of 1800 m.
