Helpful Living Hints
Building - try to have at least one north or north-west facing room for winter sun --- be sure to protect one outside area from the south-east wind ---
baboon proof --- reduce light pollution with sensor lights that point downwards for security --- minimise your impact on the fynbos to provide habitat for our fauna, seed banks and  to enhance the spiritual and financial value of Rooiels property by retaining its wild feel.
Learn more from the Rooiels Conservancy (REC)  see Tips for Gardening and Building and Plot Clearing.  And for information on the fynbos and flora of Rooiels.
Electricity - you can buy it from the Village shop but you need the meter number to recharge
Household waste -  Keep your glass, paper, clean plastic and clean tins or cans together and take to the Pringle Bay waste site.  The Municipality collects on Mondays in Rooiels but does not recycle.  You need to be sure you have a baboon-proof bin.   The communal visitor bins are not for household waste and are not baboon proof.  Garden cuttings need to go to the green composting waste station on the R44 between Pringle Bay and Betty's Bay.

Reduced risk pest control booklet - gives home remedies for controlling pests.  Many of the remedies use Diatomaceous earth which is made up of the fossilized remains of diatoms (tiny aquatic animals) and is about 80% silica. It is extracted from the earth and less harmful to the environment.
