Rooiels has a number of people who are involved in various formal and informal "citizen science" projects. In addition to the cameras recording the leopards and otters, Rooielsers are asked to share any sightings they may have of tortoises or other interesting animal interactions. Angulate tortoise - Duineskilpad - Rooipensskilpad - Ploegskaarsskilpad (Chersina angulata)
This tortoise is resident in Rooiels and often seen crossing our roads and in our gardens. To learn more about this tortoise, which is distributed throughout the coastal region from the Namibian border to Port Elizabeth, go to this link. Common or Gewoner padloper - Parrot-beaked tortoise (Homopus areolatus) This is one of the 5 Homopus species found in Southern Africa and should occur in Rooiels but is not yet recorded here. It is a small, rather flat tortoise with a shell varying in colour from olive-green to brown. The shields of the carapace are flat, with large raised areolae, and a thin black edging. It has only 4 claws on both front and back feet. Link here for more information |
