Greetings and hope Christmas has been special. Rooiels was busy with the Christmas programme and all the activities - special thanks to Wolfgang for sharing his enthusiasm, love and dedication to nature with so many Rooielsers. Thanks to Jeremy van Zyl for sharing photos of the walk to the seals on Roman Rocks - go to the Rooiels Field Notes to see more. Rooikrans seedling weeding is still an urgent priority - the Competition has been extended to 12th January with bigger prizes, and the January Hack will be on 13th January to weed Rooikrans - age no barrier. Please bring neighbours, friends and lots of children! Get Details of the Competition and the Hack on REC News Application Reference No. 2017/1603 Application for a Liquor Licence to operate a Distillery on Portion 141 Farm 559. PLEASE URGENTLY send in your comments to: [email protected]; [email protected]; and [email protected] with a copy to [email protected] giving the Reference number. Application has been made to the Liquor Licence Board for the operation of a distillery on portion 141 Farm 559 (the smallholding, Skerpioenkraal, with the Rooikrans trees and the farm barns along Porter Drive). See RERA News for more details. A number of Rooielsers have raised concerns about the environmental risks from the hazardous waste-water, the increased water use, the increased traffic, the security risk, and most especially the fire risks posed by a distillery. The notices for this application were not posted where the community could access them and so RERA have applied for an extension to the period for comment. Click to go to the the RERA information posted on RERA News where some of the grounds for concern are articulated. Leopard Toads -- go to Rooiels Chat -- to see an appeal by Ellen Fedele for Hangklip-Kleinmond residents to keep a look out to see if there are any Leopard Toads in the area (Western Leopard toad Amietophrynus pantherinus which is threatened with extinction) See you all out weeding in Klein Rooiels - or at the Hack on the 13th

PLEASE all meet at the river for the Estuary CleanUp which is part of a worldwide initiative -- get there at 8 or 9 or whenever! Bags provided, bring your own gloves - and join in for boerewors rolls for lunch afterwards. We appeal to everyone to come along, even if not for the full time. There is lots of litter to be cleared. The great response to weeding the Rooikrans seedlings and funds for gifts from Village shop ran out. But the problem is still overwhelming - there are forests of seedlings please please help to remove. In Klein Hangklip in the empty plots on the level so not difficult to get to. But also down along the river where the fire was. They pull out easily - young and old can join in. This is very serious for Rooiels. Please get bags from Wimpie at the shop. Generous folk have contributed another R1500 to be made available with rewards at the Village Shop - a R10 voucher for every 2 full bags handed in. AND AND the dont forget the prizes to be won on 30th December by those with the most bags handed in: 1st R 200 2nd R 100 3rd R 60 4th R 40 The Crayfish competition is being held on Saturday 23rd. The Competition starts on Wednesday 13th December and runs until 30th December. All participants are asked to collect bags from the Shop and give in their name and contact details. For every bag stuffed with Rooikrans seedlings returned to the Shop - and recorded by Wimpie and/or Monique - the participant wins a Magnum ice cream. For those of you in Rooiels on Wednesday 13th December - lets meet at 12 noon when Pick n Pay will be here with the bags and folk from the Hack will be around to help you find those seedlings! And dont forget to be out there any other time you have a chance -- there are all those Magnum's waiting to be won! To assist you all in deciding where to go to commence your weeding have a look at the following plots:
Unless these seedlings are removed whilst they are “easy pickings” we will be left with forests of rooikrans trees like we had 30 years ago. They are a serious fire hazard and also crowd out our natural fynbos As a direct result of the fire that swept through Rooiels on 19 March 2017 we are faced with a profusion of rooikrans seedlings that are sprouting in all areas affected by the fire. Fire stimulates the seed bank of these Australian acacia invaders, destroys any other vegetation that might restrict their growth and provides nutrients to speed the growing process. This coupled with the late rains last month have meant that Rooiels is faced with an exponential burst of rooikrans seedlings. At the Hack on Saturday 2 December, 4 members of the hack team sat for almost two hours weeding a portion of an erf affected by this invasive growth. They cleared less than a third of the erf despite having pulled up 1000s of seedlings. The situation is dire- the Hack team CANNOT fight these invaders on their own and need HELP.
COMPETITION TO FIGHT THE ALIEN INVADERS A generous Rooielser has very kindly donated R 1000 which he has given to Wimpy Stals at the Village Shop. Pick ‘n Pay at the Somerset Mall has donated 100’s of their small vegetable plastic bags. Wimpie and Monique have volunteered to monitor the competition and assist wherever they can. The Competition starts on Wednesday13th December. All participants are asked to collect their bags from the Shop, give in their name and contact details. For every bag stuffed with Rooikrans seedlings returned to the Shop and recorded by Wimpie and/or Monique the participant wins a Magnum ice cream. In addition the overall winner; i.e. the person who brings in the highest number of filled bags by 1200 on Saturday 30 December wins R 100. Second prize will be R 50, third R 30 and 4th prize wins R 20 in addition to their Magnum ice cream. There is no restriction on the age of participants although we would dearly like to see the children of Rooiels taking a full part in cleaning up the invasives! Depending on the success of this first competition we may well do it again in January but for this we need new sponsors please. Pick ‘n Pay are very keen on the idea and will send out a PR team on Wednesday 13 December at 1200 to photograph the activity and record their sponsorship. Please publicize this amongst all your family members and friends so that we have a good turnout of “weeders”. Good luck with the competition! Kind regards and a happy Festive Season to you all!
