Since mid January 2016 there have been only a few incidents of Offshore vessels setting traps illegally. The regulations and permit require that they operate at least One nautical mile from the shore in False Bay. Reports were made and the vessels retreated.
There was more action on Sunday 24th and Monday 25th February with the Layla reported - DAFF acknowledged reports and have said they would follow up with the VPS. Monday 1st February, another vessel but this was more than 500 metres out and the name could not be included in the report. All reports made to DAFF Kleinmond or Cape Town about the large Offshore vessels using the steel traps must include either the name or the number of the vessel concerned so that they can then check on illegal activity and track wrongdoing.
