It was such exciting news from Wolfgang and Jill – two male leopards visiting our cameras. Go to the Leopard Blog to see the photos which Duncan loaded for us in July. Be sure to keep checking the Blog. We eagerly await each posting of the photos to find out what is happening on the cameras. Thanks for all your efforts Wolfgang, Jill, Duncan and Kate. Don’t forget – Saturday 2nd September 5.30-8 p.m for a Community gathering hosted by RERA, RESA, REC and Village People. Please come to the Drummond Arms Pub to join all the community for a glass of wine, some soup and get to know all the new Rooielsers now living here. There will be a cash bar for other drinks. All welcome – if you have a chance and you think you may come, please email [email protected] to help with catering numbers - but come even if you forgot to let us know - the more the merrier. On Baboon updates: Joselyn now has a research assistant, Kaelin Delong, also from the USA, who will be assisting with the baboon research. Kaelin will be helping with the project for the next few months. Maybelline gave birth to female infant Marlowe on June 21st and Sage gave birth to male infant Squash on August 12th. Despite having lost infants on the R44 last year, mothers and infants are thriving. Click to link and keep up to date on the troop's family tree Alpha male Cliff recently had his GPS collar removed after he sustained a neck wound. A GPS collar may be placed on a different member of the troop in the near future so that home-range data can continue to be collected. The Rooiels Conservancy hosted the second Wildlife Research Talk fundraiser at Harold Porter Botanical Gardens on August 26th, 2017. The two speakers discussed their research on the genetics and status of cheetah in South Africa and baboon ecology and conflict with livestock farmers in the Karoo. Be sure not to miss the talks on 30th September on Verreaux’s Black Eagles and Urban Caracal in the Cape – go to the REC newsletter for details. Thanks to RESA who have updated the Emergency numbers for Rooielsers and these are now reflected on the Key Information Page – this is a Community Website and we really appreciate, photos, feedback and inputs from you all. It is a very comprehensive guide to what has worked and what has not been so successful as he established his garden. There are 123 different species in his garden that are individually documented each with photos and notes. Go to the book by clicking on the title Gardening in Rooiels Catch up with the latest on our Baboon troop by going to the Field Notes - Joselyn shares what has been happening with some photos of the baboons and some bright vuurpyl (Knipbofia uvaria) in the wetlands along the R44. She has also updated the Family Tree and has loaded an interesting scientific paper on whether Baboons have a cognitive map of their food sources and whether they plan their routes. There are some interesting papers included on the Baboon Research page See the sad photo of a Bryde's whale caught up in fishing line in the Kogelberg Bay by Hougaard Malan - shared by Chris Malan in the Field Notes There are also some photos of the spectacular wave display in the recent big storm - see Field Notes
The dolphins spent much of the day visiting on Friday 9th June, working in small groups to catch fish all across our little bay. It was too cold to go in and swim with them but wonderful to watch.! Keep checking in to the Leopard and Otter cameras as they will be loaded by Duncan when they have been collected from the cameras and prepared for the website. ArtZoo has some fun courses for children (and adults) in the coming holidays See details on Rooiels Chat There are some new photos of the leopard’s visits in February up on the Leopard Blog – thanks Duncan for loading the photos and to Jill and Wolfgang for retrieving them.
The cameras have also been active in security: the car of one set of thieves starred in our movies. This will hopefully lead to their capture. The beauty, the wildlife, the fynbos - and the “wild feeling” in Rooiels - all add to the value of our lives and our properties. So it makes sense to protect them. Our verges are very important to reseeding the fynbos and as habitat for all the animals, birds and insects that delight us. Please try to ensure that you encourage some of the indigenous, Rooiels fynbos to grow - especially in the road reserves which we need to keep "untamed". Go to Rooiels Vision and to the Flora pages for more information. It is exciting to see the new book Climate of Hope (Bloomberg & Pope) which shows that people don’t have to choose between the environment and the economy. Local action can have significant impacts and we can stop global warming at the same time as increasing growth when we take the right steps. They give many examples of how this is happening and highlight that in the USA green energy is employing more people than coal, nuclear and oil – combined. A lovely first half of May, swims and lovely still days and a Southern Right whale slowly gliding past so early in the season. Enjoyable as this has been, we all hope that winter and rain arrive soon! We are so sorry for those who lost their homes and so very grateful to the firefighters who did such amazing work to prevent more houses being lost. Please go to the Fire page for more on the March 2017 fire in Rooiels and to get links to spectacular photos. Go to the Holiday Programme to see whats in store in the Easter Holidays -- and -- go to the RERA news to catch up on what has been happening in and around the village this year and for links to the Fire Fund for those who lost their homes. The Baboon Family Tree is continually updated by Joselyn with photos on our troop and dont forget to report any hits or interesting baboon notes on the Baboon Sightings page. The Leopard blog will be updated soon by Duncan with the February and March photos When searching for places to go on the website - it is quicker to go to the Website Directory. Or you can enjoy meandering through the Nature section. These rainbows were all around Rooiels and the Kogelberg on 7th April - a reminder of the beauty that surrounds us
Help keep Rooiels clear of alien plants and enjoy gathering over tea or a drink on the First Saturday of every month.
A very serious fire started on the Betty's Bay side of Pringle Bay (near the 3 Flavours guesthouse) and rapidly spread. Much of Pringle Bay was severely affected, disaster struck a few homes but by the amazingly good work by both the local fire volunteers and the municipal and broader Western Cape Firefighting teams, the impact was limited.
See the full report from the Pringle Bay Ratepayers Association on Wanted Known and it is also on the RERA News Go to the Otter Blog to see video clips of the otters - they were caught on camera marking territory on several nights. It is such fun to be able to get a glimpse of them. Thanks to Duncan for these. And we hope to have some new leopard photos to share soon. So be sure to keep checking the Leopard Blog in the coming weeks. Also regularly go to the Rooiels Field Notes to see the latest photos about nature from Rooielsers: klipspringer, Smith's red rabbit and a European roller are the latest to be added An application has been made for Removal of Restrictions on the Title Deeds - Erf 106 Priestlaya Road. If there are any objections must be in by 3rd March
We also have some photos from the Christmas Programme -- and please if anyone has some photos from the other activities, we would love to share them on the website!! A big thanks to Mark Butler and the RESA Team for all their work - read about the new cameras and the actions in the RESA Newsletter. Please see invitation by Sandra and Claire to their Open House on Sat 18th Feb - on the Rooiels Chat
