Leopard Photos, Water Quality and Dam levels, Environmental regulation Overlay plans and more22/1/2017 Go to the Leopard Blog to see the photos collected in January and to the Other animals blog to see some photos of our intrepid climbers retrieving them! Also see the latest Water Quality report and the Dam levels on our Environment page.
Fires all around us – and please our volunteer firemen need support and food and drink to keep going. Please drop off donations of energy bars etc and bottled water or cokes (need to be small plastic bottles as they don’t have cups out near the blaze!) You can leave donations at the RESA office for collection by one of the Fire volunteers for storage at the Fire Station. Fireworks – some people set off fireworks on January 1st --- PLEASE note that ALL fireworks are prohibited at any time in Rooiels. We live in a very high fire danger zone and so fireworks are totally prohibited. We are also a nature conservancy and in deference to our animal neighbours and peoples pets, we prefer not to have noisy explosions. Fire is a real problem. Please be extra careful. Never have braai fires in the open wind and never, ever, deposit coals from braai or house fires in the fynbos – even if they are two days old. They, along with cigarette butts, are the cause of most of the fires. The Holidays were busy and fun, and the wind was kind for most of it! Next month we will have photos of all the social events. Please send us photos and/or descriptions of your experiences to share in the February news The AGMs of most of the organisations were held over the holidays and you can find Annual Reports, Minutes and information on the RESA, REC and RERA pages. Go to the RERA News to see the Eagle Awards. The News also gives the link to the Overstrand Draft Environmental Management Overlay Zones which you can read on the website or download (but it is a big PDF file). These are draft regulations related primarily (but not exclusively) to dune and fire hazards and include legislation on the removal of alien vegetation and building zones. On the whole these regulations seem very sound and worthwhile but there is some concern about a few aspects, including provision for the Municipality to have authority to clear all the road verges without reference to the local community or local aesthetic heritage. You are all asked to view the regulations and to provide your feedback, either directly to the Municipality, or to RERA (email [email protected]).

It seems to have broken up and is not in Rooiels. Only very few red tides are toxic, but it is better to be safe and avoid mussels if the red tide reaches our shores. You will see the luminescence in the breaking waves at night - and the kids love to stomp their feed in the sand to make it glow!
